- A single craving usually passes in 3 to 5 minutes.
- The worst withdrawal symptoms last a few days to a couple of weeks.
- Cravings become less frequent the longer you stay quit.
One craving: minutes
Ireland’s HSE says individual cravings usually pass in 3 to 5 minutes. QuitNow, a Canadian quit-smoking service, says each craving only lasts between 3 and 5 minutes. That is the number to hold on to: the pull is real, but the peak is short.
Waiting it out can feel much longer than it is — especially if you are watching the clock. That is why the four Ds work best with a timer running in the background while you do something else: delay, distract, deep breaths, drink water. See our guides for cigarette cravings and vape cravings.
The whole withdrawal: days to weeks
Cravings are one part of nicotine withdrawal, which can also bring irritability and restlessness. Smokefree.gov says the worst withdrawal symptoms only last a few days to a couple of weeks. The early days are the hardest stretch; they do not stay that hard.
Do cravings ever go away?
They fade. Smokefree.gov says cravings to vape are common but temporary, and that they will fade the longer you stay quit. In practice that means fewer cravings, weaker ones, and longer gaps between them. Familiar triggers — a coffee, a stressful day, a night out — can still bring one back, which is why a plan for the moment is worth having even months in.

What makes a craving stronger or weaker
- Triggers. Stress, coffee, alcohol, being around people who smoke or vape, and boredom are the classic ones. See common triggers.
- Being tired or run-down. Smokefree.gov notes that feeling tired or run-down can make you want to vape.
- Having a plan. Knowing what you will do for five minutes takes much of the panic out of the moment.
How UrgeLock uses this
Because a craving is short, UrgeLock is built around the minutes rather than the months: a one-tap guided action that carries you past the peak and counts the urge as beaten. It is a behaviour tool, not medical treatment.
